Biosecurity movie

Research involving high-risk pathogens such as SARS, coronaviruses and influenza viruses is essential. This research leads to new detection methods and therapies. To protect both themselves and the environment, researchers work as safely as possible with this high-risk material. This is called biosafety.
In addition to biosafety, measures are needed to prevent pathogens or related knowledge from falling into the wrong hands and being misused. This is called biosecurity. The implementation of biosecurity measures reduces the risk of misuse of dangerous pathogens and confidential information.
For the implementation of a comprehensive biosecurity policy, eight focus areas, known as the pillars of good practice, are relevant. Physical security ensures that only authorized people have access to high-risk material. However, physical barriers may be breached intentionally or unintentionally. This is why the culture within an organization and the behavior of its employees is so important. For example, strangers should not be let in or given a lift.
Laboratory safety also requires careful selection and periodic screening of personnel. High-risk laboratories can supplement their regular security measures with extra screening of employees, for example by requiring a certificate of conduct. Appropriate measures should also be taken to prevent external personnel from coming near high-risk materials and confidential information.
It is essential that high-risk material is properly registered and that materials are safely stored. The transport of high-risk pathogens by third parties is governed by legislation that must be complied with. Information about high-risk materials and related knowledge must be properly secured. Unlocked computers and poorly secured Wi-Fi networks and servers can result in information unintentionally being accessible to third parties.
It is therefore essential that management includes responsibility for biosecurity in an organizationÕs infrastructure, so that sufficient time and resources are made available to guarantee biosecurity. Developing response plans in collaboration with emergency services and security regions is important for a rapid response to emergencies involving dangerous pathogens, in order to limit their spread as much as possible.
Regularly discussing biosecurity at all levels of an organization helps to raise awareness, making it easier to detect any failings that are not immediately obvious in daily practice. It is important to thoroughly protect high-risk materials and related knowledge. A carefully designed biosecurity policy addresses all eight pillars. The Biosecurity Office provides information and advises on appropriate biosecurity measures.
